What is Atenolol?

Atenolol is a heart medication used to treat chest pain, hypertension and is also effective in treating or preventing heart attacks. It is in a class of drugs called beta-blockers which affect the blood flow through the circulatory system.

Atenolol was introduced in 1976 and was developed as a replacement to propranolol. The atenolol chemical works by slowing the heart and reducing cardiovascular workload.


Potential for Abuse?

There is no evidence of Atenolol abuse.


Atenolol Side Effects

Serious Atenolol side effects:

  • slow or uneven heartbeats
  • feeling light headed
  • fainting
  • swelling of the ankles or feet
  • stomach pain, nausea, low fever, loss of apetite, dark urine, clay colored stools, jaundice
  • depression
  • cold feeling in hands or feet

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of these side effects, or have an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat.

Less serious Atenolol side effects:

  • decreased sex drive
  • impotence
  • difficulty having orgrasm
  • insomnia
  • tired feeling
  • anxiety or nervousness
